An Awesome Screenshot alternative, for people who want the file, not the cloud
Awesome Screenshot is not really a screenshot extension. It is a shared workspace — recordings, share links, a team library, comments — that also takes screenshots. That is a genuinely good product for teams who live on share links, and a lot of machinery to accept if what you wanted was a PNG in your Downloads folder. This page is for the second group.

The trade you are actually making
Awesome Screenshot's free editing is good and its recording is genuinely useful. What you give up is not money — it is scope. Three things come with the workspace model:
An account, and a place your screenshots live
Sharing and the library want you signed in, and the free plan meters what you keep there. Nothing sinister about that; it is how the product is paid for. But it does mean a screenshot becomes an object in someone else's system, with a retention policy and an access list, rather than a file you already know how to handle. For a shared bug tracker that is exactly what you want. For a screenshot of an invoice, it is not.
Broader permissions than capture needs
A capture-plus-workspace extension typically needs standing host access
across sites to do everything it does. That is a wider grant than
activeTab, which Chrome hands over for one tab in response to
your click and takes back afterwards. Whether it matters depends entirely on
what else is open in your browser — and for most people what else is open is
their email and their bank.
Software that keeps growing
Workspace products add features, because that is what justifies the team plan. If you use them, that is value. If you wanted one keystroke and a PNG, each release is a slightly heavier tool doing the same small job.
The alternatives
Full Page Screenshot: a file, and nothing else
Mine, so weigh the rest accordingly. Click the icon, it scrolls and
stitches, the preview opens on its own, you crop, annotate or redact if you
want to, and you export PNG, JPEG or PDF. There is no account, because there
is nothing to have an account for. It asks only for activeTab,
makes no network requests of any kind — no analytics, no error reporting, no
update pings from the page — and deletes captures from your browser after 24
hours. It handles sticky headers by excluding the pinned pixel band rather
than hoping the page cooperates, and it walks inner scroll panes on
app-style pages. MIT licensed. It does not record video and it has no share
links; that is the point of it, not an omission awaiting a roadmap.
Capture Full Page: same shape, also local
One-click capture with an editor and PDF export, free, no sign-up. A reasonable pick alongside mine if you want a second opinion.
GoFullPage: popular, and back in the store
Free capture and free PDF, annotation on Premium. Its original listing left the Chrome Web Store on 10 August 2026 over a copyright complaint its developers describe as an error; GoFullPage BETA is in the store while they appeal, so it installs today. See also the free-tier comparison.
FireShot: if you capture in bulk
Best in the category for batch capture across many tabs. Its free tier is PNG only, with JPEG, PDF and editing on a one-time Pro licence. Detail in the FireShot comparison.
Chrome DevTools: nothing to install
⌘⇧P → "Capture full size screenshot". PNG only, no editing, no PDF, and lazy-loaded content below the fold often comes out blank because it does not pre-scroll. Full walkthrough in how to take a full page screenshot in Chrome.
When to stay on Awesome Screenshot
- You need screen recording. No free capture-only extension replaces it, mine included.
- Your team reviews work on share links. Handing someone a URL beats attaching a 6 MB PNG, and that workflow is the product.
- You want comments on screenshots. A local file cannot do that; a workspace can.
- You already pay for it and it works. There is no prize for switching.

Where mine is the wrong choice
- No screen recording. Stills only.
- No cloud, share links or team library. It hands you a file; that is the whole model.
- No batch capture across tabs — that is FireShot's territory.
- No scheduled or API-driven capture. Use a screenshot API.
- Chromium only — Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, Vivaldi. No Firefox or Safari build.
- It is new, and it is one person. Weigh that against a product with a company behind it.

What is a good Awesome Screenshot alternative without an account?
Full Page Screenshot or Capture Full Page. Both capture, edit and export locally with no sign-up and nothing uploaded. If you also need screen recording, there is no like-for-like free replacement and Awesome Screenshot remains the better fit.
Does Awesome Screenshot upload my screenshots?
Capture happens in your browser, but the product is built around a cloud workspace: share links, team libraries and recordings live on their servers, and those features want an account. If you only ever save files locally, less is involved — but the sharing path is the reason the product exists, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Is Awesome Screenshot free?
There is a free plan and it is reasonably generous on editing. The metering is on the cloud side: how much you keep, how long recordings can be, and what team features you get. Checked 28 August 2026; plans change.
What permissions does a screenshot extension really need?
Less than most of them ask for. Chrome's activeTab permission grants access to a single tab in response to your click and expires on its own, which is enough for full page capture. Broad host access — "read and change all your data on all websites you visit" — is standing access to every tab including the ones you are logged into, and is worth noticing before you accept it.
Can I still get share links without a cloud tool?
Not from the extension, no. A local tool hands you a file; sharing it is your file-sharing system's job — Drive, Slack, email, whatever you already use. For many people that is a feature rather than a gap, because the screenshot never becomes a second thing to administer.
